On Friday, October 27, Vancouver will welcome the soulful nueva trova Cubana spirit of legendary Cuban musician Gerardo Alfonso. His music is a beautiful mix, rich in influence from many musical genres from across the Caribbean. Gerardo masterfully weaves these sounds with his urban and popular roots, while never abandoning his trova spirit.

Gerardo’s most recent concert was in Bolivia, where he was honored to participate in events commemorating the 50th anniversary of the death of the revolutionary leader Che Guevera.

This free concert kickstarts the Vancouver 7th International Che Guevara Conference, which runs from October 27-29, and features 14 speakers from Canada, Cuba, Venezuela, U.S., and England. As part of the conference program, Gerardo will also be giving a workshop on music and politics in Cuba.

Born in Guanabacoa, Cuba on November 1, 1958, Gerardo was musically inclined from a young age, and by his teenage years he was performing his first compositions. In 1980, he joined the Nueva Trova Cubana movement, which was made up of young and talented musicians who were especially interested in the development of socially engaged lyrics. In 1997 he composed, “These are still the Dreams” (Son los sueños todavía), a song dedicated to Ernesto Che Guevara. It quickly became one of his most emblematic songs, and has been performed by countless other artists around the world as well.
